Instagram releases new Topic and Interest Channels in Explore

Instagram releases new Topic Channels

Instagram has just released more topic based features for you to discover content in a more meaningful way. Instagram's latest feature of topic-based video channels will be created by the app itself, using an algorithm. We really don't know much about how the topics are recommended to users, however it can be speculated that it must be very similar to the explore feature of the app.
The recommendations will show as "Picked For You: [TOPIC]," very similar to what users have experienced thus far with explore. Also, as it can be seen through Instagram and Facebook's recent updates, video content is becoming their prime objective. Facebook just gave $60 million to publishers to encourage live video on the social network. And Instagram has reported an 150% growth in view time of videos on the app in the past sic month, which is impressive.

As a social media user, this is pretty exciting. However, I see Mark Zuckerberg and the Facebook team working a plan to take over another industry, an industry that YouTube has ruled over for the past decade. It truly will be interesting to see where Facebook Inc. heads with its platforms and if it is going to head towards YouTube's territory.

Also, here is the list of topics thus far:
  • Oddly Satisfying
  • Cheerleaders
  • Dancers
  • Calligraphy
